I raise beef cattle in western Kentucky, and am not a gun expert so when the population of coyotes on my ranch grew to the point where they killed a new born calf, I headed to the local sporting goods store and inquired from the sales person as to what the best rifle to deal with the coyote problem was. There were three sales persons standing close by when I asked one of them and almost simultaneously they all pointed to the Ruger Mini 14, 223 cal. standing on the display rack. I looked it over purchased it with a scope and headed home. I took the rifle to the pasture for a field test and was absolutely amazed at the smooth action, and the nice balance of the rifle. My wife and I spent the rest of the afternoon shooting targets up to 150 yards. She was so comfortable with the rifle that she out shot me and enjoyed that very much. I plan a few more days in the pasture becoming familiar with the rifle before I head out to introduce this fine piece to the local coyote population. PS, while I am not a firearms expert I am a retired Deputy Sheriff with over 35 years in law enforcement and have fired a lot of different firearms and know the good from the bad when I shoot them, and this is an excellent piece of craftsmanship.
